Human trafficking is a prevalent issue that is becoming more and more common in communities and cities across the United States and around the world. As the issue continues to become more widespread, there are groups working tirelessly to rescue human trafficking victims while bringing the perpetrators to justice at the same time. Author Kimberly Rae is one such individual working to fight back against the dangers of human trafficking from her home base in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Her experiences in this fight and the victims she’s come in contact with as a result serve as the basis for creating the suspenseful book, The Shadow, which centers on the life of Meagan Winston and an unexpected turn of events.
Meagan Winston lives in Gainesville, Georgia and works at a local store, Rahab’s Rope, selling jewelry and custom accessory pieces that are hand-crafted by women who were victims of human trafficking in India. She travels to Mumbai at least twice a year to visit with these women, witness first hand the progress they are making in their new life and receive the latest trinkets and accessories the women have made. It’s a journey she’s been making for the last three years and in that time, she’s grown close to these women and now looks forward to spending time with them and their children during each visit.
Upon returning from her latest trip, Meagan goes to the store where she believes everything will be business as usual. Although she’s happy to be home, she can’t shake the uneasy feeling that someone is following her. Rather than looking into the issue, she just chalks the feeling up to jet lag and goes into work the next day. She’s excited to see her co-workers, who have become more like family over the last three years, and share the custom items from her trip. Much to her surprise, a man by the name of Cole Fleming comes into the store stating that he’s an FBI agent who needs to speak with her.
Feeling uneasy but wanting to be cooperative she goes with him and his fellow agent, Steve Campbell, to the local FBI office where she undergoes questioning. As the interrogation continues, Meagan is shocked to learn that she is a key suspect in a drug trafficking ring that’s been operating on an international level. It turns out that major drug deal transactions took place right after her arrival in India during each of her visits over the course of the last three years. Just when she thinks it can’t possibly get any worse, Cole tells her they have video surveillance of each international flight connected to the drug deals and she’s the only common passenger factor.
Meagan now has no choice but to fight back against these accusations but isn’t quite sure where to start. As she works to defend herself, she begins to develop romantic feelings for Cole. Little does she know the same thing is happening to him as well. The two work to push their personal feelings aside in an effort to keep things professional. Even with everything weighing on her plate at the moment, Meagan still can’t shake the feeling that someone is watching her.
Could it be FBI agent Cole Fleming keeping tabs on her or someone else who continues lurking in the darkness refusing to reveal an identity or motive for being in her shadow?
To answer that question, you are going to have to purchase this book and find out for yourself. I’m not going to be the one giving away any secrets!
What I can tell you is that this book is absolutely one of those page turnings stories that you will not want to put down. Kimberly Rae did an excellent job at writing the words in such a way as to keep you in suspense from the opening line of the book all the way through to the last page. It is worth noting that the book is the first one in the Rahab’s Rope Series that she will be creating. Each book in this series will focus on an aspect of human trafficking, as it’s a cause near and dear to the author’s heart.
My Final Thoughts
Reading suspense novels is not typically something that I gravitate towards, however, knowing that this book somehow tied into human trafficking peaked my interest. As an abuse survivor myself, I am drawn to stories that show women standing in support of those that have endured unspeakable acts in life and then doing what they can to support these individuals as they try to piece their lives back together. That being said, I found this book to be a great read from a romance suspense standpoint as Meagan is a very relatable character and it’s easy to get caught up in the her situation. I am looking forward to reading the remaining books in the series as well as looking at other works by Kimberly Rae.
I recommend this book to anyone who’s looking to get lost in a well-written suspense novel that mixes in the right amount of romance and drama to keep things interesting.
